Instrument:
guitar. specifically, a Santana SE PRS or an old '70s Electra
through a line 6 pod, and a Trace Elliot "Tramp" or
a vox cambridge amp, and occasionally a Taylor W14C through a
Digitech RP7 and a Trace Elliot acoustic amp. and i sing loudly
through my Scope scented Beta58. (really, i soaked the mic grill
in Scope because it smelled bad. now it's like singing and gargling
at the same time...)
Music
Experience:
i picked up bass guitar at age 13, harmonica at 14, acoustic guitar
at 15, piano at 16, then drums and other toys. actually minored
in music in college. a vocal minor. so i had to sing operas and
stuff. but i swear, the vocal pedagogy that i learned has allowed
me to learn how to make it through 3 and 4 hour gigs.
Influences:
i started out an acoustic guitar player and singer/songwriter
type. my initial influences, and some current, are scott
dente, dave matthews, ani difranco, steven chapman, and early
wes king. the
way that Scott Dente and Ani Difranco violently attacked their
acoustic guitars inspired me to try rock and roll on acoustic.
i have since picked up the electric and am now like a little wide
eyed kid. whenever i play, and particularly, when i solo, i try
to think, what would Miles Davis, or John Scofield do right now?
Miles has taught me much about saying something with your instrument.
Knowing when to speak, knowing when to be silent, knowing where
to place a comma, and so on. Other influences include Sting, U2,
Goo Goo Dolls, Jimmy Eat World, Foo Fighters, Keane, Coldplay,
VAST, Phil Keaggy, Over the Rhine, Train, The 77s, John Scofield
and Howie Day.
